Position Summary

The Mortgage Underwriter Manager coordinates, manages, and supports the functions of underwriting and processing in the mortgage loan process. In addition, this position is the Senior Underwriter and also underwrites and processes mortgage loans as a part of the production of the department.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Underwrites the FHA/ VA loans and conventional loans with a Refer or Caution risk class from an automated underwriting system.
  • Underwrites and approves nonconforming loans.
  • Reviews and approves exceptions to Lending Policy.
  • Ensures overall compliance with mortgage regulations through research and training of staff.
  • Examines and modifies current operating procedures to maximize efficiency.
  • Develops and updates lending policy manual as necessary.
  • Supervises, schedules, trains, evaluates, informs, and provides direction to underwriting staff.

Education, Experience & Skills Required

Knowledge of:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • FannieMae, FreddieMac, FHA, and VA Guidelines
  • Regulatory compliance requirements
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong mathematical skills

Ability to:

  • Maintain confidentiality of customer information
  • Take more than normal care to prevent loss to the organization
  • Underwrite and review closed loan files within given time frame
  • Perform duties under frequent time pressures
  • Solve problems independently while applying logic and discretion

Education and Training:

  • Requires Bachelor's degree or five more years of mortgage underwriting experience.
  • Mortgage processing experience is preferred.
  • Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office.
