Position Overview
This person will serve as the primary lab supervisor and provide direct technical assistance for a pre-clinical neuroscience research lab focused on stress and addiction. This person will oversee and manage the efforts to successfully complete multiple long-term and short-term research projects through the effective and efficient management and allocation of both personnel and resources within the labs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the efficient and successful completion of multiple research projects. This includes directly performing surgical procedures (e.g., intravenous catheter implantation, intra-cranial infusions and cannula implant), data collection related to behavior, in vivo photometry, and acute slice electrophysiology experiments, and data analysis.
  2. Coordinate multiple ongoing projects. This involves identify needed cohorts of animals, experimental design (e.g., timeline, proper controls, properly powering treatment groups), and overseeing employees' and students' time, effort, and data.
  3. Ensure the efficient and successful completion of multiple research projects by assisting in the training and supervising as many as 15 undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows and work to maintain a high standard of quality within the lab.
  4. Oversee and complete wet-lab related experiments (e.g. performing surgical procedures, collecting and analyzing data, microscopy, flow cytometry) in support of ongoing research.
  5. Oversee maintenance of a large suite of unique, shared rodent testing chambers and maintain broad oversight of other departmental behavioral equipment and spaces. This involves coordinating usage, maintaining equipment functionality, and troubleshooting both equipment issues and animal issues.
  6. Maintain regulatory compliance and licensure for federal, state, and university requirements in relation to animal use in research, use of biohazardous substances, use of controlled substances, etc.
  7. Oversee and complete laboratory research-related purchases within the Marquette University purchasing system and maintain proper inventory of all research related items. Provide technical consultation for shared departmental purchases.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) and at least 3 years of experience involving functional and technical competencies or a Bachelors Degree with at least 5 years of relevant job experience

Must have a working scientific knowledge within the field of neuroscience, specifically pre-clinical models of research

Experience designing experiments and performing multiple lab techniques such as: immunohistochemistry/fluorescence, western blotting, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, qPCR and dissections of discrete neuroanatomical regions

Should have experience maintaining and troubleshooting various hardware/software interfaces

Proven track record of effective technical training and oversight

Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate various projects with multiple short and long-term endpoints

Ability to prepare, comprehend, and comply with written SOP's and other regulatory requirements

Strong record-keeping and organizational skills

Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain strong work ethic

Experience budgeting grant-related expenses

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with managing/supervising and training of undergraduate/student personnel
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex rodent behavioral equipment and associated computer programs
  • Understanding and experience with laboratory regulatory requirements related to lab safety, controlled substances, biosafety, and animal use
  • Experience with Med-PC software (coding and usage)
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, SPSS or SigmaPlot, GraphPad, Prism.
