The Wisconsin Humane Society's mission is to build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness.

Since its inception in 1879, the Wisconsin Humane Society has become one of the most established and well-recognized non-profit organizations in the community. For over 130 years, the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) has been providing quality, cost effective services for homeless animals. It is the largest humane society in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the United States.

Among the many programs and services the Wisconsin Humane Society provides to the community:

• adoption and sterilization services for companion animals;
  
• a wildlife rehabilitation center;
  
• training for youngsters and adults to respect and care for animals including important recommendations to reduce pet overpopulation and neglect and abuse;
  
• pet and wildlife behavior telephone tip-lines and one-on-one recommendations to assist the community at large;
  
• elementary school teacher training to incorporate humane treatment into their curriculum;
  
• summer camp for at-risk, central-city youth to train dogs, feed baby birds and learn to break the cycle of violence with respect and caring; and
  
• a school-based program administered by therapy dogs, teachers and school psychologists to teach empathy and help children better relate to others.
